Brief History of Rotary |
What are we about? |
The world's first service club was founded on 23 February 1905 when lawyer Paul Harris and three friends met in a small office in downtown Chicago. They named their new club "Rotary" to describe the practice of meeting in rotation at the members' various places of business. During the 1911-1912 Rotary year, the association became international. The National Association of Rotary Clubs, which became the International Association of Rotary Clubs in 1912 adopted the name Rotary International (RI) in 1922.
Today, Rotary International is a humanitarian service organisation and we currently have 34,000 clubs around the world. We are clubs of business and professional leaders joined together to volunteer their expertise and channel their passion to improve the communities both at home and abroad. |

Objective of Rotary ClubsThe general objective of Rotary Clubs in every country is the same - the development of fellowship and understanding among the various businesses and professions while promoting international understanding, goodwill, and peace. Rotary Clubs everywhere have one basic ideal, the "Ideal of Service". Which is best expressed in Rotary's principal motto "Service above Self"
